Breathable crib mattresses are all about added safety and comfort. Should your baby roll over to be face down, having a breathable surface is an excellent idea. According to an independent test designed to measure suffocation risk, Naturepedic scored in the lowest risk category! Naturepedic breathable crib mattresses are also more comfortable. Airflow under the baby allows heat to dissipate more efficiently for less sweaty backs and a reduced risk of overheating. We do breathability right with our unique and practical approach.
Breathable crib mattresses are all about added comfort and safety. Simply put, babies tend to cry more when they're uncomfortable. Airflow under the baby allows heat to dissipate more efficiently, helping regulate temperature for less sweaty backs and a reduced risk of overheating. According to airflow tests, breathability may also increase safety by allowing air to flow more freely around the baby.
breathability done right
how it works
The breathable cover features a soft organic cotton surface and a 3-dimensional polyester lattice structure that allows air to flow through the fabric and under the baby for 360° air circulation. Since air is able to pass freely through the cover’s 3D structure, babies can breathe right through it!
practical design
The breathable function is encapsulated in a washable cover that completely hugs the mattress. This removable layer has a waterproof backing that keeps the mattress clean and protected from urine, spit-up, and other messes. In the event of an accident, simply replace with a spare cover or put the baby back to sleep on the fully functional underlying mattress. The cover can then be machine washed and dried at your convenience.
why an organic breathable crib mattress?
The CPSC recommends putting babies to sleep on their backs, and we fully back this recommendation. According to the CPSC, "Placing babies to sleep on their backs instead of their stomachs has been associated with a dramatic decrease in deaths from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)". With that said, however, there will likely come a time when your baby will turn face down in his or her sleep. That's when having a breathable cover the baby can actually breathe through may be helpful in providing an extra level of protection. A breathable cover can also improve temperature regulation and reduce overheating.
more comortable
Airflow under the baby means less sweaty backs and a lower risk of overheating. Moisture can more easily evaporate while heat can dissipate more efficiently. All this translates into a baby that's more comfortable, and hence, more likely to sleep through the night!
safer
More sources of air improves sleep safety. While in their crib, babies can typically breathe air from above and from the sides. With Naturepedic breathable technology, they also get airflow from below. In an independent test designed to measure suffocation risk, Naturepedic achieved the lowest risk category! The test uses a simulated baby positioned face down and air is blown in and out of its mouth to simulate breathing. With Naturepedic breathable technology, the simulated baby was able to breathe directly through the breathable layer indefinitely!

so what is your baby actually breathing for 10-14 hours a day?
A breathable crib mattress isn’t safer if it means your baby will be breathing chemical flame retardants – or mold, mildew and other microbial growth. Sadly, many other breathable crib mattresses on the market are more susceptible to these concerns. Our crib mattress design is GOTS certified organic, breathable and waterproof for your baby’s health, safety and hygiene.

"The data clearly shows that Naturepedic crib mattresses with a breathable cover are five (5) times below the threshold of what is considered suffocation risk under the worst possible scenarios... it is not prudent to remove the waterproofing from a crib mattress as that only creates non-hygienic conditions... a safer approach is to keep the mattress hygienic and to add a breathable layer as is done with Naturepedic."
