crib safety

In addition to chemical safety, hygienic safety and breathability, there are some basic physical safety considerations as well, such as a firm flat sleep surface, a snug fit, and the recommendation to put babies to sleep on their backs.

Crib Safety Tips

from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

"For infants under 12 months of age, follow these practices to reduce the risk of SIDS and prevent suffocation... Place baby on his/her back in a crib with a firm, tight-fitting mattress."

firm surface + snug fit

The CPSC clearly recommends a firm sleeping surface for babies. All Naturepedic organic crib mattresses are designed to meet this safety recommendation. For best performance, place in a crib with a solid flat support system that won't sink or sag like some wire mesh systems can.

It's also important for the crib mattress to fit snugly so the baby cannot get trapped between the mattress and the crib. A good safety test allows for no more than two fingers to fit between the mattress and the bars/side of the crib. Naturepedic organic crib mattresses are designed to fit snugly, but if you encounter an unsafe gap, please call us immediately and we will gladly do what we can to help resolve the problem.

back sleeping + no soft bedding

According to the CPSC, "placing babies to sleep on their backs instead of their stomachs has been associated with a dramatic decrease in deaths from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)."  It is also recommended to "remove pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, pillow-like stuffed toys, and other soft products from the crib." Finally, it can't hurt to keep small objects out of your baby's crib as well since these can become choking hazards.
